FAQ

Q: When did the Parkway close?
A: The Parkway Speakeasy Theater closed its doors on Sunday, March 22. I Like The Parkway organized a tribute and over 600 people came out to sign a petition, show support and have fun during the the final movie showings.

Q: Why did the Parkway close?
A: We don't know fully since we didn't run the Parkway, but the short story seems to be that the Fischers were taking a loss on the Parkway and couldn't keep running it while taking care of their family. Our thoughts go out to them.

Q: Who should we yell at?
A: There is nobody to yell at. This is nobody's fault. This is just something that occurred. Instead, we're proving that we as a community can take lemons and make them into a movie theater.* We can do this together. We cannot do this in the way we want without each other.

Q: I heard that they're going to tear down the Parkway and build condos/malls/Starbucks/a portal to Hell.
A: From what we've gathered, this is extremely unlikely. The landlords want a business in there and preferably a theater business.

Q: Does I Like The Parkway have a mission statement? What do you hope to accomplish?
A: The mission of I Like The Parkway is to facilitate the re-opening of the Parkway Theater. We aim to do this by working together with our community to better understand and represent its needs, wants, and aspirations. In doing so we offer our hand to anyone that is willing to work with us positively in order to realize these goals. It is our intent to provide anyone that chooses to run the next incarnation of the theater our support in all of its forms.

Q: What relationship do you have to the Parkway folks/the landlords/the city?
A: While we've spoken to all parties above, we are not affiliated with any of them. We are representing the East Lake (and larger, Oakland) community that cares about having a positive business in the space where the Parkway was. We'll continue to talk with everyone who has and will be involved in this process, but the only group we represent is YOU, the people. No one, including the landlords, the city, the Fischers, is opposed to what we are doing. In fact, they all seem to quite like it because we're remaining positive. We want to find a solution that works best for everyone.

Q: What can I do?
A: A movement isn't a movement without the masses. Sign up for our email list, and if you've got any combination of passion, skills or connections, volunteer for one of the research groups we have going. Also, if you haven't already, we would love it if you could tell all your friends... both those who loved the Parkway and those who have yet to discover it. The more support we get, the more of a difference we can make.

Q: What can't I do?
A: *Make a theater out of lemons. That's absurd.
